HISTORY OF SWAMI VIVEKANAND MEDICAL MISSION

A great visionary & former \Chief of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, late Shri Balasaheb Deoras was very; keen to do something for the poor & the down-troden especially the people in rural areas who were in dire need of some kind of medical aid within reachable distance from their respective villages and hence the donated his 3-1/2 acres of agricultural land along with; a cow-shed and with the co-operation of like minded doctors decided to give the basis medical aid on voluntary basis and hence the “Sunday Dispensary” came into being in 1974. Guided by the strong teachings & influence of Swami Vivekanand, some doctors & social workers formed Swami Vivekanand Medical Mission in the year 1974 and is registered as charitable trust in 1978d (under the registration of Societies Act of 1860 and Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950). The registration number of the Society; is Maharashtdra 143/78 (NGP) Regd, Trust No.F-2261 (NGP) Regd.No.F.C.R.A. 083870129.

This mission is entirely a voluntary-organization and is run basically on donations.

Few Doctors inspired by the teachings of Swamiji started attended “Out Patient Medical Care” once a week in rural area about 12 Kms (about 7.5 miles) from Nagpur (India) on National Highway; in an abandoned cow-shed. The main purpose was to provide selfless service to the poor & needy. This humble beginning has now blossomed into a large rural, medical health care center, covering approx. 125 villages in an around Nagpur. It has started-

  3. Smt. Shashi Sharma Memorial Hospital (A Mother & Child Health Care Hospital). In 1996
  4. A Pathology Laboratory. In 1997
  5. Dental Department.In 1998
  6. Staff & doctors Quarters. In 1999
  7. Nursing School (training Village Girls as Multi Purpose Health workers). In 1999
  8. General Medical Ward & Cardiac Care Unit. In 2000
  9. Neonatal Care Unit. In 2000
  10. Physiotherapy department. In 2004
  11. Department of Radiology (X ray). In 2005
  12. A Mobile Unit
